Auto Theft: Massachusetts

In Massachusetts, auto theft is the stealing, maliciously damaging, buying, concealing, possessing, getting control of or taking the motor vehicle or trailer without the authority of the owner and stealing any of its parts or accessories. Auto theft is the fourth most common crime committed in Massachusetts. The Federal Bureau of Investigations Uniform Crime Reports found that in 2016, auto theft made up approximately 6% of the crimes reported in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

In Massachusetts, auto theft is governed by M.G.L. c. 266 sec. 28 and punishment for violating the statute can result in up to fifteen years in prison, up to two and a half years in jail, a fine of up to $15,000.00 or a combination of incarceration and fines.
