Debt Collectors Are Now Allowed To Contact Consumers On Social Media

The rumors that you may have been hearing are unfortunately true. Debt collectors can now attempt to collect a debt from consumers by contacting you on social media. As if the constant calls were not bad enough, now these guys can actually start messaging you about your debt on your favorite social media sites. You go there for entertainment reasons, not to hear about the amount of money that you owe and the fact that you haven’t paid it back. You can chock this one up to yet another thing that is wrong with 2020. How much more can we take?

It’s a good thing that the New Year is literally right around the corner. Hopefully the world will start getting back to normal soon. As far as debt collectors and their new rights to contact consumers on social media, it also provides them with more opportunity to take part in tactics that are considered to be debt harassment. For example, a debt collector may message you through social media and threatens to contact your boss in order to inform him or her of your debt. They may threaten to do the same with your family and friends.

Some debt collectors do this in order to scare people into either making a payment on the debt or paying of the entire amount of debt in one lump sum. Nobody wants their boss, family, or friends to know about their less than ideal financial situation because it can be bit embarrassing. Some debt collectors will try to take advantage of the fact that you are vulnerable to this. Here’s another example. A debt collector may message you through social media and threaten to have you arrested if you don’t pay the debt that you owe them.

The good news is that debt collectors simply don’t have this power, and they are not allowed to make direct threats. If they do, they are flat out lying and participating in debt harassment. Here’s a third example. If a debt collector messages you through social media and makes a threat that they will have part of paycheck withheld or even have your entire paycheck withheld, they are lying. Debt collectors don’t have the authority to do this. If the debt collector lies and tells that this will happen they are committing debt harassment.

Of course just because debt collectors are now allowed to contact consumers through social media it certainly doesn’t mean that they will stop calling you and sending you letters through the mail. That is why you also need to know your consumer rights when it comes to these things. For example, debt collectors are only allowed by law to call you between the hours of 8 am and 9 pm. That means if they call you before 8 am and or after 9 pm the debt collector is actually harassing you. In addition, if you inform the debt collector that you don’t wish to be contacted by phone, they are not allowed to call you at any time.

However, some debt collectors will continue to call you even after you have informed their agency that you no longer wish to receive phone calls. If they do they are directly violating your consumer rights, and this is not allowed by federal law. As you can see it can make a tremendous difference in your life when you are fully aware of your consumer rights. You no longer need to be a victim. Those days can be long over even if you owe a debt collector money. So what can you do if you are suffering from debt harassment? The very first thing you should do is contact a law firm that specializes in consumer rights.

They will be able to put a stop to the debt harassment. They may also be able to carry out a lawsuit against the debt collection agency that has caused you such a high amount of anguish. If the debt collection agency is found liable, you will be entitled to the compensation that you deserve. It goes without saying that you should not be suffering any mental pain because a debt collector is harassing you by making threats are completely untrue.
