You Are Not Safe From Debt Harassment On Social Media

People who owe a debt to a collection agency know what it is like when those annoying phone calls never stop. Each and every time that the phone rings it could be a debt collector on the other end of the line. So what do you do about it? If you’re like most people you simply stop answering the phone. If it happens to be a family member or friend at the other end of the line you end up calling them back. The amount of debt collection calls can get so bad that you hope and pray for the phone not to ring at all. This is no way to live. If you owe a debt than you also know what it feels like to go to the mailbox each day.

Chances are high that a debt collector or even multiple debt collectors are sending you letters on a frequent basis. It’s a stressful feeling to say the least. So what do you do to escape all of this pressure? You turn to social media because it is a safe place where you can check up on what your contacts are up to. You can even post complaints. You can get recommendations on a wide variety of things. You can escape from those nasty debt collector phone calls and letters. However, that is soon coming to and end. That is due to the fact that debt collectors are now allowed to contact you through social media.

They didn’t used to be, but now they can. That means you are not safe from debt harassment on social media. Pretty soon debt collectors will start to message you on social media on a constant basis. They may even attempt to “friend” you so they can write on your wall and embarrass you. By the way, writing on your wall in order to embarrass you is a form of debt harassment, and they are not allowed to do this. Social media used to be a safe place where you were protected from debt collectors and the potential of being harassed by debt collectors.

That is no longer true. If you are suffering from debt harassment, meaning you are being harassed or bullied by a debt collector, we do have some good news to share with you. There are federal laws in place that protect you from debt harassment. That means there are a bunch of things that you can do to make them stop contacting you. There is also a good chance that you can sue the debt collectors who are harassing you for any pain and suffering that you have experienced. That means they may very well end up having to pay you. Imagine turning the tables on those annoying debt collectors.

How great would that feel? The bottom line is that you when any debt collector contact you they may be using tactics that are considered to be debt harassment. For example, if a debt collector contacts you by phone, he or she can only contact you at certain times of the day and evening. That means debt collectors can’t call you whenever they feel like it, or at all hours of the day and night. Debt collectors must stop calling you or contacting you on social media, or even stop mailing you letters if you ask them to stop.

If you ask them to stop and they continue to call you, or contact you on social media, or mail you letters than they are taking part in debt harassment. They are not allowed to do this according to federal law. Furthermore, when a debt collector contacts you they are definitely not allowed to bully you into making a payment, or paying off the entire amount of debt that you owe them. That means the debt collector cannot make any threats whatsoever. That being stated, some debt collectors do make threats. Some debt collectors will threaten to garnish your wages, or have you arrested.

Some will even stoop so low as to threaten to have your children taken away. You need to keep in mind that debt collectors are not police officers, or judges. They have absolutely zero authority to garnish your wages, have you arrested, or have your children taken away. If they threaten you with any of these things they are committing debt harassment.
