At this point, you know that you need to do something about fixing your credit. Enough is enough already. Having bad credit is a drag, and negatively impacts your lifestyle. You’re more than fed up with being turned down for loans and credit cards. You’re more than fed up with all of the high interest debt that you have accumulated over the years. At this point, the question that you may be asking yourself is should you hire a professional credit repair agency, or attempt to fix your credit yourself?
They are both good options. A reputable credit repair agency first pulls your credit reports from each of the three (3) major credit bureaus in order to pinpoint your credit issues. They will use all three because each credit-reporting agency has its own set of data that determines your credit scores. That means there may be mistakes that appear on one of your credit reports, but don’t appear on the others. Once any errors have been identified, you then give the credit repair agency any supporting documentation you might have.
For example, if there’s a bill on your credit report that your ex-spouse was actually responsible for under your divorce decree, you can use that document to prove it shouldn’t be impacting your credit. In some cases, it’s difficult to determine what to include as far as supporting documentation goes. That’s another way a credit repair agency can help you. For example, if you’re a victim of identity theft and a fraudulent account appears on your credit report, it can be tough to prove it isn’t yours because you don’t have any documents that relate to the account.
When the credit bureaus receive the dispute and supporting information, they then work with the credit repair agency in order to determine if the item should be removed from your credit report. The major law governing your rights when it comes to credit reporting is the Fair Credit Reporting Act, but it isn’t the only law on your side when it comes to credit repair. A good credit repair agency will scrub questionable credit report items against other laws, such as the Fair Credit Billing Act, which regulates original creditors; the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, which oversees collection agencies; and others that address medical illness, military service, student status and other life events.
All of that being said, you can certainly attempt to fix your credit yourself if you have both the time and the patience.
