Do you know that millions of Americans with disabilities get financial help from Social Security Administration (SSA)? SSA administers the SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance). It is a type of disability benefit.
SSDI benefits in a nutshell
The Social Security tax fund pays for the SSDI. Individuals have to show that they have acquired enough work credits in the past years. The individual has to show that he or she has paid the Social Security taxes on their wages. SSA publishes a ‘blue book’ that lists all the disabilities or medical conditions. You have to prove that your condition is severe.
Here are a few things to keep in mind if you are planning to apply for SSDI benefits.
Disability Proof
One has to prove that they have a disability as defined by the SSA. And this disability has to be a permanent one (12 months or longer) that stops you from performing any work for wages.
Although, your condition is not listed in the blue book yet you can apply for SSDI. In which case you have to prove medically that your condition is comparable to one listed in the blue book.
Additionally, you have to show that you earned enough work credits in the past years. Some guidelines for work credits that required as per your age:
- If younger than 24 years of age, 6 work credits are required in the last 3 years before the start of your disability.
- Between 24-31 years of age, you should get credit for working half the time between turning 21 and the onset of your disability.
- If older than 31 years of age, you need to show that you worked for at least 10 years prior to the start of your disability
