Did you know that millions of people in the United States have past due debt? Most of these people are being contacting by debt collection agencies that are attempting to collect that past due debt. Perhaps you are being contacted by Credit Recovery Systems LLC, a third-party debt collector located in West Seneca, New York. Maybe you are being contacted by another debt collection company. Either way, you should know that any collection agency and any collection agent who represents the agency are supposed to treat you with a high level of decorum. In essence, they are not allowed to make you feel like anything less than a person when communicating with you. However, there are some debt collection agents that treat consumers who owe them a debt very poorly. It is actually called debt harassment. The debt collection agencies should know better and not allow their representatives to commit debt harassment. The debt collection agencies are on the line for being fined and sued in a court of law. Yet, it’s ultimately up to you to know your rights and put a stop to debt harassment.
That being stated, most people who owe past due debt to a collection agency are completely unaware of their rights. So they continue to be abused by the dishonest collection agents who resort to tactics that are considered to be debt harassment. For example, a debt collector is not allowed to contact your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers in order to inform them about your past due debt. They’re not even allowed to threaten you that they will do this unless you pay them the debt. In reality, a debt collector is not allowed to contact anyone else besides you or your representative in order to discuss your debt.
Guess what happens if they do? The debt collector is committing debt harassment. That means you may be able to sue them for damages/money in a court of law if you can prove that they committed debt harassment. There are many other debt harassment tactics that the dastardly debt collectors use when attempting to collect debt from people. A debt collector is not allowed to contact your boss in order to inform him or her that you’re not a responsible person and you should be fired because you owe a past due debt. Once again, they’re not even allowed to threaten you that they will do this if you fail to pay them the debt.
The bottom line is that when debt collectors make threats they are trying to scare you into paying the debt and that is considered to be debt harassment. The threats can get even crazier. For example, there are debt collectors who will threaten to have you arrested if you don’t pay off the debt. Guess what? Debt collectors can’t have you arrested. They have absolutely zero power to do this even if they sound legit about it. They are lying. If that’s not crazy enough, there are debt collectors who will actually threaten to have your children taken away from you for being a bad parent.
Guess what? The Department of Child Protective Services does not take children away from their parents just because the parents owe past due debts. Although that may sound absurd when reading it in writing, it can sound down right scary when hearing it on the phone from a debt collection agent who is putting themselves in a position of authority. It’s easy to see why a great deal of consumers fall for these underhanded debt collection tactics. The bad apples of debt collectors pray on your emotions. They know that you’re emotions are highly charged when you owe money.
